Last Updated on June 15, 2024 by Satish Mishra

Renu (name-changed) aged 26 years recently got married in December 2017 to an engineer by profession only to discover later that he was not an engineer and running business of spare parts and goods.  Still Renu opted to keep mum on this but later when she discovered another aspect that her sister in law is also staying in the same house as she has been thrown out of her matrimonial home due to her tantrums and defiance to obey elders, she just can’t take it anymore.  There were so many things about the family no one told her and today she is the lone sufferer.  Nor her parents or any of the family members had any idea of the boy’s family going through this kind of a rough patch.

When finally, Renu spoke about the issue to her husband, who instead of controlling the situation made the situation worst by beating her. Now Renu is on the crossroads whether to go back to the matrimonial home or stay back?  This question keeps on haunting her repeatedly.

This is just an example of one out of many women in India undergoing matrimonial problems that are graver then it seems. Renu finally got the courage to speak to an advocate who understood the issue and advised her to opt for the legal recourse to put her marriage back on track. In the beginning she sent a divorce notice to her husband and then complaint to police under sections 498A, 406 IPC and section 4 of Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
